Project Description: As a Graphic Design Intern, I helped with updating marketing projects and presented design recommendations, but my biggest task was creating a set of standardized documents that could be used for all print materials, such as flyers, mailers, brochures, postcards, and many more. This project aimed to give consistency across all printed documents and allow for the six-person graphic design team to work more efficiently as they need to complete multiple projects per week. As this was a huge project, I had the help of one of the Senior Graphic Designers who mentored me throughout the way. My role included doing research, analysis, and applying design principles.
When starting this project I chose to look at previous print materials, to identify design patterns and establish what designs have been successful in the past and why other designs did not reach their full potential. While building this kit, I constantly consulted the graphic design team to make sure that these documents would fit seamlessly into their workflow. To do this, I observed how team members started new projects and always asked for feedback on how this kit would work best for them. Additionally, I also sought the input of copywriters, as this team works with the majority of the content that goes on each print piece. With them, I took a closer look at things such as heading length, content, and paragraph structures.
To complete this project, I created paragraph and character styles in InDesign, made sure documents were in the correct format, and ensured that the company logo was placed on each main page with the guidelines of Kaiser Permanente’s standards manual in mind. Making sure that these elements were added would help guarantee a degree of efficiency in the team’s future print projects.
